Facilities Management: What I’ve Done Where
This section is not intended to be a comprehensive CV but to more fully detail the responsibilities held in my different facilities positions than can be done within the strictures of one or two pages.
Facilities Management is a wide-ranging discipline and, in the early days at least, exactly what did and did not comprise a Facilities Manager’s responsibilities varied, sometimes considerably, from one organisation to another. Indeed, I used to find that if you got a dozen Facilities Managers in the same room, you’d find a dozen slightly different sets of responsibilities. Whilst to a large extent the range is now more clearly defined, and there are staples which one would expect to find under the auspices of Facilities Management in most organisations – cleaning, catering, building maintenance, security, reception services, etc. – there are still areas where it’s not so clear cut. An example of this is Health & Safety. As much H&S legislation concerns areas squarely within the facilities remit, in small organisations the full gamut may fall under FM. Larger ones, or those with peculiar requirements, may have a separate Health & Safety department or overall responsibility may lie under a different discipline, for example Production. In such cases, the Facilities Manager’s responsibilities become focussed on those elements which fall distinctly within their own operational areas.
The above applies very much to my own FM history with no two roles I’ve undertaken encompassing identical responsibilities. Below, I have attempted to show what responsibilities fell under the different facillities roles I’ve held. You can view a more detailed description of a role under each of the links in the navigation bar at the top of the page.
Direct operational and budget responsibility with delivery either personally or via the FM team |
Management and budget responsibility; Service delivered by specialist contractor or TFM service provider |
Close involvement in the process but no direct budget or management responsibility |
