r_or = It was the Romans who first developed this area. It's reported that they arrived in November 70AD and discovered a warm spring … but the Roman calendar was always a bit odd. In the Eighteenth century the Duke of Devonshire decided to develop the town's natural hot springs as a spa and to turn Buxton into a sort of small Bath. At which time he changed the town's name to Bidet.
